Monroe Mourns Loss of Police Dog, Alec Officer Gregg Meyer & his partner Alec
12/20/07 With the recent retirement of Tango the police dog, the community of Monroe was shocked to learn of the sudden passing of Alec, the remaining dog in their K-9 unit. Just 9 years old, Alec a black German Shepard, became ill after a 16 hour shift and began having seizures. His veterinarian discovered he had an aggressive form of cancer and his partner and trainer, Officer Gregg Meyer, made the humane decision to have Alec euthanized. Since Alec was a full time service dog, he was buried with full honors at the Pines Cemetery in Lebanon where they have a special section for service animals. With nearly 50 officers, 19 police dogs and local media in attendance, Alec's casket was draped in an American flag and he was given a 21 gun salute. Rev. Brad Olson, pastor of the Monroe United Methodist Church was officiating and Mason Police Honor Guard led the procession to the gravesite. "He's no different than any other officer," Myers said. "He was my backup. He was there to give his last breath to get me home at the end of the night." His family, including three children who considered the dog to be their pet, also attended the funeral. Alec was buried with his badge.
