HOT WEATHER TIPS

Let me out of this hot car!!

Hot Weather Safety Reminders to Pet Owners:

As temperatures rise in the summer heat, pet owners should remember the following: It could save a pets life!

  • Never leave a pet alone in a car! The temperature can reach over 100 degrees in just minutes.

  • Take along a container of cold water when traveling with your pet.

  • Play with your pet in the early morning/late evening, when the weather is cooler.

  • Never play when the weather is excessively humid. It can cause dehydration.

  • Asphalt gets hot when the temperature is high and your pets body can heat up and their paws can get burnt.

  • Always make sure your outdoor pet has a shelter and shade.

  • After your dog goes into ocean, the salt water should be rinsed off .

  • Never take your pet to the beach unless you can provide shade and plenty of fresh water.

  • Heat is much more of a health danger for older and overweight pets. Be extremely careful to make sure they have water and cool shade.

  • Observe for excessive panting and drooling which means that your pet is overheating.

  • In just 15 minutes your animals body temperature can climb to deadly levels and cause nervous or cardiovascular system damage, or even death.

  • Keep your pet away from strange yards, since there might be pesticide and other poisons sprayed on the grass.

  • Watch for coolants,  such as Anti-Freeze or other chemicals coming from or puddling under cars. Animals are extremely attracted to their sweetness. Ingestion is most often deadly.

  • Clean and brush your pets coat to help prevent summer skin problems.

  • Long-haired pets are especially prone to overheating. Have your groomer leave the coat at least 1-inch long to help prevent overheating. Any shorter will predispose your pet to sunburn.

  • Never let your pet run loose. They can contract diseases, get injured, killed, or stolen, and cause traffic accidents.

  • Have a collar and identification tag on your pet at all times. A microchip is invaluable added protection. Tags can fall off and become lost. Collars can get become caught in bushes and be pulled off.

  • ALWAYS have your pet Spayed or Neutered. A free roaming or accidentally lost pet can become pregnant!

  • Do not open your windows unless they are protected by a screen. Curious pets may jump out and end up getting hurt. Hi-rise syndrome is when cats (and sometimes dogs) fall out of a window not realizing the distance to the ground. It is a myth that all cats land on their feet!

  • Check your pets body at least once a week for fleas, ticks, and ear mites.

  • Take your pet to the veterinarian for a summer check-up and use good flea and tick repellent.

  • Do not use sunscreen or repellent, unless specifically stated for animals.

  • If your pet does become hyperthermic (overheated), put them in a tub of cool water, feet first. Pets sweat through their paw pads.

  • Rabbits are extremely sensitive to the heat and can die quickly die from exposure. Keep a frozen water bottle in their cage or pen to prevent overheating.

  • Drape a light towel over your rabbits cage to give your bun some much needed shade on hot days.
