"Mother Nature never sleeps" and "accidents happen". How many times have you heard these two phrases? But they really do ring true. So, like another famous motto, you really do need to "Be Prepared." Whether you live in California where a devastating earthquake can strike at any moment or Ohio with it's dangerous thunderstorms or tornados, you and your family need to have a plan in case of emergency and that involves including your pets, too. We all remember seeing the horrifying images of Hurricane Katrina with cats stranded on roofs or dogs swimming frantically for their very lives. Worse still, was watching families being rescued and forced to leave their homes and pets behind - not knowing if they'd ever see either again. But out of tragedy, a glimmer of hope arose. The rest of the country stepped up and volunteered their time and money to help care for these abandoned pets. Just as important, we all demanded action from our government that a horror like this would never happened again. And it worked. In late 2006, The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Safety Act (PETS Act) was signed into law by President Bush. Now, every city must have an evacuation plan in place that includes a safe place for pets and animals. Hurricane Katrina taught all of us a harsh lesson that the reality of being separated from our beloved pets is very real. Accidents and natural disasters can scare your pet into hiding and cause them serious physical harm. Do EVERYTHING you can to ensure your pets safety and well being. Don't let them end up lost and starving on the streets or scared and forgotten in a strange shelter. Get a printable copy of our Grab-N-Go checklist. Keep a kit in your home AND car.
