ABOUT CATNIP & CARROTS

Our Goals and Philosophies

We believe shelters are not the solution – just a band-aid on the problem. You must confront the crisis of pet overpopulation at the root and that begins with spay/neuter programs. Simply put, as hard as we try, there are not enough homes for them all. One female cat and its offspring can produce 420,000 more kittens in just 7 years! Just 1 female rabbit can give birth 12 times a year and produce 84 more babies! Reduce the litters and everyone reaps the rewards: less strays roaming our neighborhoods and destroying our property; fewer civil complaints about noise, aggressive feral cats and safety concerns such as rabies; less animals being hit by cars and causing accidents; the killing and wounding of wildlife in our communities; and most importantly – less  euthanasia. Remember: Every call to County Animal Control or Law Enforcement costs YOU money. We could literally save millions of tax dollars at the personal, city, county and state levels by aggressively addressing this issue and it's simple solution.

We strive to prevent any animal from ever entering the overcrowded shelter system by working with local humane societies and hard working rescue groups to promote our common goals of a better life for all animals by reducing pet overpopulation.

  • Our #1 goal:  If we truly want to curb pet overpopulation, we MUST make it simple and convenient for our community to get access to the procedures their pets need - at an affordable price to everyone, especially our low income and senior/disabled residents.

In California, Catnip and Carrots goal is to acquire a state of the art mobile Spay/Neuter surgical unit - the Surf City Neuter Scooter! We need to raise about $200,000: $130,000 for the vehicle and $70,000 for supplies and manpower to get it up and running in the first year. Wouldn't it be awesome to see a 26' van with brightly painted surfing cats, dogs and rabbits cruising down Beach Blvd. for everyone to see?

In Ohio, Catnip and Carrots goal is simply to end stray animal overpopulation. Monroe, where our office is located, is a small rural community of only 7000 residents. Centrally located between Cincinnati and Dayton, this tight knit community is growing by leaps and bounds. Our small town is capable of being a leader in the fight against homeless and unwanted animals. We hope that one day a veterinarian will open a practice here and we can partner with them to operate a permanent spay/neuter/microchip clinic.

  • It’s a fact:  Microchipping and ID tags used together offer the best protection available to get your lost pet back quickly and safely. We promote “Tag Day - Every Day”. A collar, tag and wallet emergency card is available free of charge from us at any time and we include them with every feline adoption. We use only Home Again microchips. If you find a stray animal, please take it to any veterinarian or shelter to have it scanned or call us. We have a Universal scanner capable of reading all brands of chips.

  • Mother Nature never sleeps:  In Ohio, springtime brings lots of thunder, lightening and devastating tornados or floods. In California, there is little threat of hurricane or tornado, but this paradise is earthquake country and offers NO early warning or chance to escape nature’s wrath. Any of these dangerous events can scare your pet into hiding and cause them serious physical harm. All pet owners MUST have an evacuation plan and a disaster preparedness kit in their home & car. Hurricane Katrina taught all of us a harsh lesson that the reality of being separated from our beloved pets is very real. Do EVERYTHING you can to ensure your pets safety and well being. Don't let them end up lost and starving on the streets or scared & forgotten in a strange shelter. Click for a copy of our Pack N Go Emergency Checklist.

  • Hard Times:  We also realize that sometimes life takes a difficult turn and a pet may get lost in the shuffle. We are taking steps to help low income senior/disabled owners with food, shelter and veterinary care for their animals. In those who are battling disease or are simply alone, a precious pet can enrich their life by offering love and companionship. We want to make sure that special bond isn’t broken. Our mission is simple:

"We are a voice for those who can not speak."
